The Mechanics of Custom VIP Compression Strength

In high-performance thermal engineering, the balance between insulation value and mechanical structural integrity is a critical frontier. Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) are well-known for their exceptionally low thermal conductivity (λ-value ≤ 0.004 W/m·K). However, in actual structural applications—such as under-floor insulation in commercial buildings, cryogenic fuel containers, and electric vehicle (EV) battery protective enclosures—standard vacuum insulation panels can fail due to compressive stress.

The compression strength of a VIP relies heavily on its core material. At Zerothermo, we refine the internal matrix of fumed silica using advanced engineering methods. Under a vacuum pressure of less than 1 mbar, the atmospheric load exerts an external pressure of approximately 100 kPa (10 tonnes/m²) directly onto the panel core. To resist this baseline pressure and remain stable under dynamic loads, the core must maintain its structural shape.

Through nano-porous structuring and sintering techniques, our panels achieve compression strength up to 250 kPa - 300 kPa (at 10% deformation), which is more than double the capabilities of standard fiberglass or open-cell polyurethane VIPs. This guarantees thermal performance over decades, preventing vacuum loss caused by physical crushing.
