Fumed silica core vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) offer thermal conductivity values as low as 0.002 to 0.004 W/(m·K). This represents a ten-fold improvement over traditional polymeric foams. By suppressing gas-phase heat conduction through high vacuums and structural nano-porosity, engineers can reduce space consumption by up to 90% while achieving identical thermal resistance ratings.

The Physics of Microporous & Vacuum Thermal Suppression

The extreme performance of fumed silica insulation panels rests on the Knudsen effect. When the internal pore structure diameter of the material matrix is smaller than the mean free path of gas molecules (approximately 70nm under atmospheric pressure), air molecules cannot collide to transfer kinetic energy. High-temperature nano-microporous panels maintain thermal conductivity as low as 0.016 W/(m·K) even at temperatures up to 1000°C without requiring dynamic vacuums.

For vacuum-sealed units, the low-density fumed silica core provides structural support against atmospheric pressure (approx. 10 tons/m²). This enables VIPs to resist compression and preserve structural stability over decades, creating a reliable foundation for aerospace, architecture, and new energy vehicle insulation systems.
