The core science of the Vacuum Insulation Principle (VIP) is based on eliminating the medium through which thermal energy is transferred. In typical thermal insulation barriers, heat is moved by a combination of solid conduction, gas convection, and radiative transmission. By evacuating the internal gas from a highly porous core substrate, gas convection and gas molecular conduction are almost entirely eliminated.
According to the Knudsen physical rule, when the mean free path of the remaining gas molecules exceeds the average pore size of the core material, gas molecules cannot move easily. They collide with the cell walls of the core substrate rather than with each other, dropping the gas thermal conductivity to almost zero.
This results in VIP materials achieving an incredibly low thermal conductivity—often below 0.002 W/(m·K)—which is up to ten times more efficient than traditional insulating materials like EPS or mineral wool. This level of efficiency allows industries to save energy and optimize storage capacity in space-critical applications.
