The Physics of Thermal Exclusion: Deep-Dive into the Vacuum Insulation Principle (VIP)

How micro-scale structural void technology halts heat transmission across environments.

The core science of the Vacuum Insulation Principle (VIP) is based on eliminating the medium through which thermal energy is transferred. In typical thermal insulation barriers, heat is moved by a combination of solid conduction, gas convection, and radiative transmission. By evacuating the internal gas from a highly porous core substrate, gas convection and gas molecular conduction are almost entirely eliminated.

According to the Knudsen physical rule, when the mean free path of the remaining gas molecules exceeds the average pore size of the core material, gas molecules cannot move easily. They collide with the cell walls of the core substrate rather than with each other, dropping the gas thermal conductivity to almost zero.

This results in VIP materials achieving an incredibly low thermal conductivity—often below 0.002 W/(m·K)—which is up to ten times more efficient than traditional insulating materials like EPS or mineral wool. This level of efficiency allows industries to save energy and optimize storage capacity in space-critical applications.

1. Next-Generation Hybrid Core Materials

Research is currently focused on combining micro-fiber glass matrix structures with organic fumed silica binders. This hybrid approach aims to lower manufacturing costs while maintaining low thermal conductivity (around 0.0015 W/(m·K)). By optimizing core density, we can also improve structural rigidity and make the panels easier to handle on-site.

What is the core difference between Fumed Silica and Fiberglass VIP core substrates?
Fumed Silica VIPs feature smaller pore dimensions (~50nm) and are highly resistant to moisture-induced degradation, maintaining thermal performance for over 30 years. Fiberglass VIPs offer lower initial thermal conductivity (~0.0015 W/mK) but are sensitive to moisture and vacuum decay, requiring high-barrier envelopes and desiccants, and typically offer a shorter service life (10-15 years).
Can vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) be cut or modified on-site during installation?
No, VIPs cannot be cut, drilled, or modified on-site. The thermal performance relies on maintaining a vacuum seal inside the envelope. Any puncture will compromise the vacuum, causing the panel's thermal conductivity to increase to the level of the core material. All dimensions must be finalized and custom-manufactured beforehand.
How do you protect VIPs from thermal bridging at the joints?
To minimize thermal bridging (the psi-factor) at joints, installers can use staggered double-layer configurations or cover joints with premium PU foam or thin aerogel strips. Special shaped edges, such as ship-lap or stepped profiles, can also be custom-engineered to improve joint insulation.
What testing certifications do Zerothermo VIPs carry?
Our VIP products comply with ISO 9001 quality management guidelines, undergo ASTM E84 Class A fire testing, and meet RoHS and REACH environmental requirements. Each production batch is verified using standardized heat flow meter instruments prior to shipment.
