In the global race toward net-zero emissions and sustainable architecture, building envelope performance remains a critical bottleneck. Standard insulation systems—such as Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Polyurethane (PU), and rock wool—require significant thickness to achieve targeted U-values. For instance, achieving a U-value of 0.15 W/(m²·K) typically requires an EPS layer exceeding 200mm. However, in urban retrofit projects, high-density residential zones, and structural envelopes with strict spatial limits, thickness must be minimized. This spatial constraint is solved by 20mm Fumed Silica Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs).

At the center of a VIP's thermal superiority is the Knudsen Effect. In ordinary porous materials, gas molecules collide frequently with one another, transferring kinetic energy (heat). By creating a micro-porous core (typically using amorphous fumed silica with pore diameters ranging from 10 to 100 nm) and evacuating the internal air pressure to below 5 mbar, the mean free path of the remaining air molecules becomes larger than the pore size. Consequently, molecular collisions with the pore walls dominate over collisions between molecules, virtually eliminating gaseous thermal conduction. This drops the center-of-panel thermal conductivity ($\lambda$-value) of a 20mm VIP to an astonishingly low $\le$ 0.004 W/(m·K)—up to ten times more efficient than traditional insulation.

A premium-grade 20mm VIP panel consists of three critical components:

  • The Core Material: We specialize in pressed fumed silica cores mixed with organic opacifiers (to minimize infrared radiative heat transfer) and structural fibers. Fumed silica cores offer a major advantage over fiberglass: they have an incredibly small pore structure, which maintains high performance even if the vacuum slowly degrades over a 50-year period.
  • The High-Barrier Envelope: A multi-layered polymeric film (often laminated with ultra-thin aluminum layers or specialized PET foils) that keeps the internal vacuum sealed against atmospheric gases and moisture.
  • Integrated Getters/Dessicants: Chemical absorbents placed inside the core during manufacturing to bind trace moisture and gases that slowly permeate through the envelope film over its service life.

Can a 20mm Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP) be cut or modified on site?
No, VIPs cannot be cut, drilled, or nailed on-site. The panel relies on a completely sealed high-barrier envelope to maintain its internal vacuum state. Puncturing this skin will allow atmospheric air to enter, causing the internal pressure to rise and thermal conductivity to increase to about 0.020 W/(m·K). All panels must be pre-planned and custom-fabricated to size by the factory.
What is the difference between fumed silica and fiberglass cores?
Fumed silica core VIPs feature a nano-porous structure that maintains excellent thermal performance (~0.008 W/(m·K)) even if the vacuum degraded to ambient pressure. In contrast, fiberglass core VIPs lose almost all their insulation advantages if the vacuum fails. Additionally, fumed silica is completely non-combustible and has a lifespan exceeding 50 years, while fiberglass has a higher vacuum decay rate.
How is the edge thermal bridge effect handled when using VIP panels?
Thermal bridging occurs at the joints between VIP panels because of the metallic/polymeric barrier envelope. To minimize this linear thermal transmittance ($\psi$-value), we recommend staggered joint layouts or hybrid systems (using PU or rubber edge seals). Additionally, double-layer installations with overlapping joints will help eliminate thermal pathways.
