Learn MoreA technical overview of core materials, micro-porous structure, and boundary conditions in next-generation building envelopes.
In the global race toward net-zero emissions and sustainable architecture, building envelope performance remains a critical bottleneck. Standard insulation systems—such as Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Polyurethane (PU), and rock wool—require significant thickness to achieve targeted U-values. For instance, achieving a U-value of 0.15 W/(m²·K) typically requires an EPS layer exceeding 200mm. However, in urban retrofit projects, high-density residential zones, and structural envelopes with strict spatial limits, thickness must be minimized. This spatial constraint is solved by 20mm Fumed Silica Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs).
At the center of a VIP's thermal superiority is the Knudsen Effect. In ordinary porous materials, gas molecules collide frequently with one another, transferring kinetic energy (heat). By creating a micro-porous core (typically using amorphous fumed silica with pore diameters ranging from 10 to 100 nm) and evacuating the internal air pressure to below 5 mbar, the mean free path of the remaining air molecules becomes larger than the pore size. Consequently, molecular collisions with the pore walls dominate over collisions between molecules, virtually eliminating gaseous thermal conduction. This drops the center-of-panel thermal conductivity ($\lambda$-value) of a 20mm VIP to an astonishingly low $\le$ 0.004 W/(m·K)—up to ten times more efficient than traditional insulation.
A premium-grade 20mm VIP panel consists of three critical components:
| Insulation Material | Typical Design Conductivity ($\lambda$) | Thickness Needed for U=0.20 W/(m²·K) | Expected Lifespan | Fire Classification (EN 13501) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20mm Fumed Silica VIP | 0.004 - 0.005 W/(m·K) | 20 mm | 50+ Years | Class A2-s1, d0 (Non-combustible core) |
| Polyurethane (PU / PIR) | 0.022 - 0.028 W/(m·K) | 110 - 130 mm | 25 - 30 Years | Class E to B-s2, d0 |
| Mineral Rock Wool | 0.035 - 0.040 W/(m·K) | 180 - 200 mm | 30 - 40 Years | Class A1 |
| Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) | 0.032 - 0.038 W/(m·K) | 160 - 180 mm | 30+ Years | Class E |
Zerothermo Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CBVAC Group and a national high-tech enterprise, is headquartered in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area with its production base located in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province. This facility stands as one of China’s largest comprehensive production centers for vacuum technology application products.
Leveraging decades of vacuum engineering experience from our parent company, CBVAC Group, Zerothermo specializes in manufacturing high-vacuum insulation solutions that enable green transitions across architecture, pharmaceutical cold chains, and industrial applications. Our expertise extends to high-precision vacuum hardware integration, including standardized and custom flanges.
Special sizes (beyond the range of ANSI/ASME/DIN and other standards) are produced according to customers' drawings or technical parameters.
Square, oval or other special shaped flanges. - Oversize/small diameter: such as diameter over 60 inches or micro precision flanges.
Optimized vacuum sealing flange designs for specialized deep-vacuum applications, ensuring maximum tightness and gas permeability barriers.
How next-gen vacuum technology will redefine thermal barriers across global industries.
As regulatory frameworks globally tighten toward net-zero targets (such as Europe's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive - EPBD), the demand for space-efficient insulation has surged. Over the next decade, Zerothermo is focusing its research on three primary developmental tracks:
Current VIP envelopes rely on complex multi-layer metalized laminate films that are difficult to recycle. Our upcoming research phases are aiming at the integration of bio-based core matrices and single-polymer high-barrier films that allow complete product recycling at the end of its 50-year service life.
To prevent edge thermal bridging—where heat bypasses the VIP through the joints—we are scaling the production of prefabricated hybrid panels. By surrounding a 20mm VIP with a 10mm layer of high-density PU foam, we create an impact-resistant, easily installable cladding module that reduces linear thermal bridges ($\psi$-value) to less than 0.01 W/(m·K).
For critical infrastructures like pharmaceutical cold storage warehouses or aerospace testing rooms, monitoring VIP vacuum levels over time is key. Zerothermo is testing thin-film sensor arrays integrated directly inside the VIP cores. These sensors transmit real-time internal pressure data via RFID tags, giving facility managers instant alerts on any vacuum degradation.

How local resource integration and advanced automation allow us to deliver world-class VIP panels at scale.
Operating one of China's largest vacuum technology facilities in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, Zerothermo has built a vertically integrated supply chain that directly lowers manufacturing costs while improving product consistency. This resilience rests on three key pillars:
Sichuan Province is rich in mineral silica resources, providing us with a direct, stable supply of premium silica precursor material. By bypassing international shipping corridors and securing regional material flow, we shield our clients from market price swings and keep our fumed silica supply consistent.
Maintaining a stable internal vacuum ($\le$ 5 mbar) requires precise control during the gas evacuation phase. Our automated lines combine precision robotic handling, laser-controlled vacuum sealing chambers, and online quality inspection stations. Each 20mm VIP panel has its barcode scanned and vacuum level recorded before leaving our warehouse.
We build our products to meet international quality frameworks, ensuring smooth integration in domestic and overseas projects alike. Our manufacturing centers are certified under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards. Additionally, our VIP panels comply with European Union REACH and RoHS standards, and have earned CE markings for architectural projects.
