Understanding the Knudsen Effect in Nano-Porous Core Structures

The outstanding performance of microporous and vacuum insulation panels is based on suppressing the three mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction (solid and gaseous), convection, and radiative transfer.

By engineering the core material with pores smaller than the mean free path of air molecules (approx. 68nm at STP), we restrict molecular collisions—effectively minimizing gaseous heat transfer. This phenomenon, known as the Knudsen Effect, is key to how our fumed silica cores maintain low thermal conductivity even under partial vacuums, ensuring long-term thermal performance.

What is the difference between nanoporous/microporous insulation panels and standard VIPs? +
Standard Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) rely on a vacuum to minimize gaseous thermal conduction, typically using a fumed silica or glass fiber core. Microporous insulation panels, on the other hand, do not strictly require a vacuum to achieve low thermal conductivity; their core pore size is smaller than the mean free path of air, which limits gaseous conduction even at atmospheric pressure.
Can these panels be cut or resized on-site? +
Standard vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) cannot be cut, drilled, or altered once sealed, as puncturing the envelope releases the vacuum and increases thermal conductivity. However, we offer specialized non-vacuum microporous panels that can be customized and adjusted on-site, as well as prefabricated custom shapes tailored to your drawings.
How do microporous panels perform under high temperatures? +
Our microporous silica panels are formulated to withstand continuous temperatures up to 1050°C. They contain opacifiers that reduce infrared radiation transfer, maintaining low thermal conductivity at elevated temperatures where standard materials can experience thermal degradation.
