Why are fumed silica vacuum insulation panels preferred over fiberglass cores?
Fumed silica cores have a tiny pore size (around 10-100 nanometers), which prevents heat conduction by air molecules even at atmospheric pressure. If the vacuum envelope is damaged, a fumed silica panel still keeps a thermal conductivity of around 0.020 W/m·K. In contrast, a punctured fiberglass VIP loses its vacuum and drops to a thermal conductivity of 0.040 W/m·K or worse, while also being susceptible to moisture absorption.
Can vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) be cut or customized on-site during installation?
No. Because VIPs rely on an internal vacuum within a sealed barrier film, they cannot be cut, drilled, or altered on-site. Any puncture will compromise the vacuum envelope and reduce thermal performance. To accommodate complex geometries, we design and manufacture custom shapes and sizes at our factory to fit your specifications.
How does thermal bridging affect the performance of HVAC insulation boards?
