Technical Whitepaper
As the smart retail industry goes through rapid global expansion, modern vending systems are evolving from simple mechanical drink dispensers to complex multi-temperature platforms. These units frequently run refrigeration and hot food processing setups in the same compact unit. This evolution has triggered massive energy challenges. High ambient thermal loads, heat conduction from structural supports, and strict energy efficiency regulations (like the EU Ecodesign Directive and US EPA SNAP program) demand a paradigm shift in insulation technology. Traditional polyurethane (PU) foam and mineral wool options are no longer sufficient to meet these requirements due to physical thickness limits and chemical degradation issues.
Thermal bridging is one of the main causes of energy loss in vending machine cabinets. When outdoor ambient heat breaches the cabinet walls through structural corners, compressor compartments, or product delivery ports, the compressor has to work much harder. Using VIPs allows designers to establish an almost complete vacuum thermal barrier. Because VIPs eliminate convection heat transfer inside the core material and significantly slow down conduction and radiation, they maintain a highly stable internal temperature. This design approach prevents condensation on outer cabinet surfaces and reduces the carbon footprint of commercial refrigeration units.
When selecting VIPs for vending machines, choosing the right core material is critical for long-term performance. Fiberglass core VIPs are highly efficient, but they require a very deep vacuum (below 0.1 mbar) and are highly sensitive to moisture and physical punctures. If the vacuum degrades, their thermal conductivity quickly shoots back up to 0.020 W/m·K. Fumed silica core VIPs, however, feature a nano-porous structure that maintains excellent thermal performance even under higher internal pressures (up to 10 mbar). This makes them much more durable and reliable, with an operational lifespan of over 10 to 15 years in typical commercial environments.

Industry Applications & Localization
Modern transit hubs (like metro systems, international airports, and railway stations) require round-the-clock vending machines. For units selling dairy products, fresh food, or heat-sensitive pharmaceuticals, internal temperature control is critical. Fumed silica VIPs help these machines maintain a stable interior temperature between +2°C and +8°C, even in unconditioned hallways. This prevents spoilage during power outages or load shedding. By using VIPs, vending machine operators can protect cold chain integrity, extend food shelf life, and minimize liability risks.
Today's smart office micromarkets often feature vending machines that offer both hot and cold items in a single cabinet. Insulating the 70°C hot food compartment from the 4°C cold drink chamber is a major engineering challenge. Standard foam insulation takes up too much space and degrades quickly when exposed to high heat. Using Zerothermo's customizable thin VIPs allows manufacturers to build thin, high-performance internal dividing walls. This design approach maximizes storage capacity and minimizes the energy load on both heating and cooling systems.
Vending machines installed outdoors in places like the Middle East or the Southern US are exposed to intense solar radiation and temperatures over 45°C. Traditional insulation can cause the cabinet compressor to run continuously, leading to early component failure. Implementing VIP thermal envelopes prevents outdoor heat from entering the cabinet. This setup reduces compressor run times by over 40%, lowers peak power demand, and helps operators save on maintenance costs.

Manufacturing & Logistics Strategy
As a subsidiary of the CBVAC Group, Zerothermo Technology operates a highly integrated supply chain. Our main production facility in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, is located close to key high-grade silica mineral deposits. This location helps secure a steady supply of raw materials and reduces transport costs. By handling core manufacturing processes in-house—from core preparation and dry mixing to vacuum bag laminating and final chamber sealing—we avoid the typical supply chain delays associated with multi-vendor manufacturing models.
Our production facilities utilize automated dry-forming lines, robotic vacuum sealing chambers, and real-time laser inspection tools to ensure consistent quality. Automating these steps helps minimize human error, reduce core material waste, and increase production yields. These efficiency gains allow us to offer competitive, direct-factory pricing. Vending machine manufacturers can integrate these high-performance vacuum panels into their designs without blowing their production budgets.
Every single VIP panel we produce undergoes a strict quality control inspection process before leaving our factory. We test every unit for vacuum pressure stability and core thermal performance. Using specialized thermal analysis instruments, we verify that each panel meets the required thermal conductivity limit (less than 0.004 W/m·K). This rigorous testing process ensures that our panels deliver reliable, long-term performance in demanding commercial applications.

Technical FAQ
Fumed silica core VIPs provide much higher reliability in commercial environments. They are less sensitive to moisture ingress and maintain good thermal performance even under moderate vacuum degradation. While fiberglass panels can lose much of their insulation value if they sustain minor punctures, fumed silica panels retain a significant portion of their thermal resistance. This ensures reliable service over the typical 10 to 15 year operational lifespan of a vending machine.
No, vacuum insulation panels cannot be cut, drilled, or altered once they are sealed. Any puncture will compromise the internal vacuum, causing the panel's thermal conductivity to rise back to standard values. Because of this, we work closely with vending machine OEMs to design and manufacture custom-sized panels that fit their specific cabinet geometries.
By upgrading from standard polyurethane foam to fumed silica VIPs, vending machine manufacturers can reduce overall cabinet heat gain by up to 30%. This lower thermal load allows the refrigeration system to run shorter, more efficient cycles, helping the machine meet strict global energy efficiency standards.
Because the barrier film on a VIP is relatively delicate, they are typically installed inside the double-wall structure of the vending cabinet. The panels are positioned between the outer metal shell and the inner liner, and are often secured with adhesive tape or encapsulated within a protective foam layer. This setup protects the VIPs from physical impacts during transit or operation.
Yes. All Zerothermo VIPs are fully compliant with major global standards, including RoHS, REACH, and relevant fire-safety regulations. The fumed silica core is non-toxic and recyclable, which helps manufacturers meet their sustainability goals.
For standard custom orders, production typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. This timeline includes drawing verification, raw core preparation, vacuum sealing, and a mandatory 72-hour quality assurance check to verify vacuum stability. Our high-capacity production base in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, allows us to reliably meet large OEM delivery schedules.
