The lifespan of a VIP is determined by the rate of vacuum degradation. In an ideal state, a VIP contains a porous core material (such as fumed silica or fiberglass) enclosed in a gas-tight, multi-layered envelope film under a vacuum level of less than 1 mbar. Over time, atmospheric gases (oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor) slowly permeate through the envelope film or through the sealed edges. This gradual influx causes the internal pressure to rise. Once the internal pressure exceeds critical thresholds, gaseous thermal conductivity starts to play a significant role, leading to a decay in insulation performance.
Information Gain: Unlike fiberglass-core VIPs which experience sudden thermal failure when the vacuum decays beyond 10 mbar, fumed silica-core VIPs feature microscopic pore sizes (30-100 nm) smaller than the mean free path of air molecules. This allows them to maintain excellent thermal properties even up to 100 mbar of pressure, extending the useful lifetime to over 50 years.
