The Physics of Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP) Degradation

Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) represent the pinnacle of modern thermal insulation technology, offering thermal conductivity ($\lambda$) values as low as 0.0015 W/m·K to 0.002 W/m·K—nearly ten times more efficient than conventional materials like polyurethane foam or mineral wool. However, a major concern for engineers and procurement officers is the **service lifespan** of these panels.

The lifespan of a VIP is determined by the rate of vacuum degradation. In an ideal state, a VIP contains a porous core material (such as fumed silica or fiberglass) enclosed in a gas-tight, multi-layered envelope film under a vacuum level of less than 1 mbar. Over time, atmospheric gases (oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor) slowly permeate through the envelope film or through the sealed edges. This gradual influx causes the internal pressure to rise. Once the internal pressure exceeds critical thresholds, gaseous thermal conductivity starts to play a significant role, leading to a decay in insulation performance.

Information Gain: Unlike fiberglass-core VIPs which experience sudden thermal failure when the vacuum decays beyond 10 mbar, fumed silica-core VIPs feature microscopic pore sizes (30-100 nm) smaller than the mean free path of air molecules. This allows them to maintain excellent thermal properties even up to 100 mbar of pressure, extending the useful lifetime to over 50 years.

What exact factors limit the lifespan of a vacuum insulation panel (VIP)?
The longevity of a VIP is principally limited by: 1) Gas permeation (oxygen and nitrogen diffusing through the barrier film layer), 2) Moisture ingress (water vapor penetration which degrades the fumed silica core structure), and 3) Physical edge-sealing stress causing micro-cracking over thermal contraction cycles. By using high-quality aluminum-barrier or multi-layered PET laminate films and incorporating specialized chemical getters inside, a quality manufacturer can extend the lifespan of a fumed silica panel to over 50 years.
How is the thermal conductivity of a VIP measured at the factory?
Thermal conductivity is measured using ASTM C518 or ISO 8301 standards via a guarded hot plate or heat flow meter. The VIP is placed between a controlled hot plate and a cold plate. High-precision sensors record the steady-state heat flux, allowing the computer software to calculate the exact λ (lambda) value. Leading factories inspect every single batch and print a unique serial number with the recorded thermal metrics for transparency.
Can vacuum insulation panels be modified or cut on-site?
No, VIPs cannot be cut, drilled, or modified on-site. The panel relies entirely on a continuous, uninterrupted vacuum envelope. Any puncture will result in an immediate loss of vacuum, causing the thermal conductivity to rise to that of air-filled core material. This is why Zerothermo specialized in customizing panel dimensions, shapes, and thicknesses prior to manufacturing, ensuring a drop-in fit for architectural or industrial envelopes.
What is the difference between fumed silica core and fiberglass core?
Fiberglass cores have a lower initial thermal conductivity (approx 0.0018 W/m·K) but are highly sensitive to moisture and vacuum decay. Even a slight increase in pressure (to 10 mbar) causes their thermal properties to fail rapidly. Fumed silica cores have a slightly higher initial conductivity (approx 0.004 W/m·K) but are incredibly stable. Because their pore sizes are in the nanoscale range, they maintain high performance up to 100 mbar, making them the industry standard for long-term construction projects.
