Understanding Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP) Mechanics

Industry Insights: Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) represent the pinnacle of modern thermal engineering, achieving a thermal conductivity (K-value / Lambda value) of less than 0.004 W/(m·K). This performance is roughly 5 to 10 times more efficient than traditional insulation materials like polyurethane (PU) foam, expanded polystyrene (EPS), or rockwool.

The core mechanism relies on the elimination of gas conduction. Heat transfers through three main vectors: solid conduction, gas convection/conduction, and radiation. By placing a nanoporous core material—such as fumed silica or ultra-fine fiberglass—within a high-barrier envelope and evacuating the gas down to a target pressure (typically between 1 to 10 mbar), gaseous heat transfer is virtually eliminated. This enables unprecedented space savings and thermal security across critical infrastructure projects, cold chain logistics, and high-performance building systems.

Nanoporous Fumed Silica Core

Fumed silica consists of amorphous silicon dioxide nanoparticles sintered into larger structures with pore sizes ranging from 10 to 100 nanometers. This pore size is smaller than the mean free path of air molecules at atmospheric pressure, ensuring that even if vacuum degradation occurs over time, the thermal conductivity remains exceptionally low (around 0.020 W/m·K).

Fiberglass Core Advantages

Fiberglass core VIPs offer a lower initial manufacturing cost and slightly better initial thermal conductivity under high vacuums (<0.1 mbar). They are widely used in commercial refrigeration units, deep-freeze refrigerators, and domestic appliances where structural containment mitigates puncture risks.

High-Barrier Envelopes (PET/Al Film)

The lifespan of a VIP is determined by the gas transmission rate (GTR) of its envelope. Multiple layers of metallized PET and aluminum foil protect the core vacuum against moisture ingress and atmospheric gas diffusion, securing an operational lifetime of up to 30 to 50 years.

The expected service life of a high-quality fumed silica VIP panel exceeds 30 to 50 years under standard environmental temperatures. Fiberglass-cored VIPs usually have a shorter lifespan of 15 to 25 years due to their high susceptibility to vacuum decay under humidity and gas permeation. High-barrier multi-layered laminate films and non-evaporable getters are crucial to preserving internal vacuum levels long-term.
Can Vacuum Insulation Panels be cut or modified on-site during installation? +
No, VIPs cannot be cut, drilled, or shaped on-site. The panel relies entirely on a fully sealed, evacuated envelope. Any puncture, scratch, or breach of the outer barrier film will lead to immediate loss of vacuum, causing the thermal conductivity to rise from ~0.004 W/(m·K) to approximately 0.020 W/(m·K). All sizing, corner angles, and custom holes must be calculated and fabricated during manufacturing.
