Demystifying the Custom VIP Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing of high-performance Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) represents the pinnacle of thermodynamic design. Unlike standard open-cell materials, VIP production leverages the Knudsen effect. By evacuating the internal air space down to a near-total vacuum, we restrict the mean free path of gas molecules to a distance smaller than the pore diameter of the core matrix. This reduces gaseous thermal conductivity to virtually zero.

Our fumed silica and fiberglass cores are processed through precision calibration systems that ensure consistent density, structural flatness, and edge durability. The cores are then enveloped in multi-layer gas barrier foils (consisting of high-barrier polymers and microscopic aluminum layers) before undergoing extreme vacuum evacuation and automated thermal sealing. What is the difference between fumed silica and fiberglass VIP core materials?

Fumed Silica Core: Provides a lifespan of up to 50 years. It resists moisture aging and retains low thermal conductivity (~0.005 W/m·K) even if the internal vacuum pressure rises slightly over time. It is ideal for construction and long-term cold chain applications.

Fiberglass Core: Offers a lower initial thermal conductivity (~0.0025 W/m·K) but ages faster if moisture enters the panel. It is commonly used in home appliances like refrigerators, where the service life is shorter.

Can Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) be cut or modified on-site?

No. VIPs rely on a sealed internal vacuum. Cutting, drilling, or scratching the outer envelope will compromise the seal, letting air inside. This causes the thermal conductivity to rise to that of the core material (~0.020 W/m·K).

All panels must be measured and manufactured to the exact size required before sealing. We specialize in producing custom sizes and shapes to fit your project design.

How does edge thermal bridging affect VIP installation?

Because the protective outer barrier contains metallic film layers, heat can transfer along the edges of the panels. This is known as the "thermal bridging effect."

To reduce this heat transfer, we recommend staggering the panels in a double-layer layout or using panels with specialized polymer edge wraps during installation.

What testing standards do Zerothermo VIPs meet?

Our panels undergo strict quality control to verify their performance. We test thermal conductivity according to ASTM C518 / ISO 8301 standards. We also run pressure decay and accelerated aging tests to ensure the panels perform reliably over time.
