In the modern era of thermal management, the search for highly efficient materials is driven by global carbon neutrality goals. Traditional materials such as Polyurethane (PU) and rockwool are hitting their physical limits. The future belongs to Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs). As a leading customized panel VIP factory group, we focus on engineering panels with a thermal conductivity ranging between 0.0015 W/m·K and 0.004 W/m·K. This is up to ten times more efficient than conventional materials.

The Physics of Low Thermal Conductivity

Thermal conduction in porous materials occurs via three main routes: solid conduction through the core matrix, gas molecular movement within the pores, and radiative heat transfer. VIPs operate by removing gas molecules from the core structure. By lowering the pressure inside the core, the mean free path of the remaining gas molecules exceeds the average size of the pores (known as the Knudsen Effect). This significantly reduces convective heat transfer.

Core Material Comparison: Fumed Silica vs. Fiberglass

Different applications call for different core structures:

  • Fumed Silica Core: Features a pore size of about 10–100 nanometers. This core is highly durable, retains vacuum conditions well, and has a lifespan of 20 to 50 years. It is widely used in construction, refrigeration, and cold chain applications.
  • Fiberglass Core: Offers a lower initial thermal conductivity, but features larger pores (1–10 micrometers). As a result, it is more sensitive to moisture and vacuum degradation, making it suitable for shorter-lifecycle applications.

Fumed silica core VIPs are highly durable, with an expected service life of 20 to 50 years under standard conditions. Their nano-microporous structure makes them less sensitive to minor vacuum loss compared to fiberglass-core panels.
Can Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) be cut or altered on site?
No, VIPs cannot be cut, drilled, or altered once manufactured. Cutting the panel punctures the vacuum-sealed outer barrier film, causing immediate vacuum loss and reducing the panel's thermal performance to that of traditional insulation.
