In modern high-performance architecture, the building envelope represents the critical thermal barrier. Conventional window glass remains a main thermal leakage channel, driving up energy bills. The emergence of Double Glazed Vacuum Sealed Windows (Vacuum Insulated Glass, or VIG) represents a massive leap forward in thermal management technology, matching the performance properties of standard insulated walls.
Heat transfer through structural window assemblies happens via three pathways: conduction, convection, and radiation. Traditional double pane windows rely on air or argon gas gaps to insulate. Over time, gas slowly escapes through standard window edge seals, reducing performance.
Double glazed vacuum sealed windows solve this issue by evacuating the space between the glass panes to an ultra-low pressure of less than 10-4 Pa. At this level, gas conduction and convection are eliminated. Heat cannot travel across the vacuum space, resulting in extremely low thermal transmittance values.
VIG units consist of two glass sheets separated by a micro-spacer grid. This grid keeps the glass from touching under atmospheric pressure. A perimeter seal locks the vacuum inside the unit. Small getter elements are added inside the spacer to absorb any outgassing over time, ensuring long-term insulation performance.
| Glazing Type | Standard Thickness (mm) | U-Value (W/m²·K) | Acoustic Insulation (dB) | Approximate Weight (kg/m²) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single Pane Float Glass | 6mm | 5.8 | 28 - 30 | 15 |
| Standard Double Glazed (Argon) | 24mm (6+12Argon+6) | 1.2 - 2.8 | 32 - 35 | 30 |
| Triple Glazed (Argon Filled) | 36mm (4+12Ar+4+12Ar+4) | 0.8 - 1.1 | 34 - 38 | 45 |
| Double Glazed Vacuum Sealed (VIG) | 8.3mm - 12.3mm | 0.4 - 0.6 | 39 - 43 | 20 - 25 |
Governments worldwide are updating energy codes to lower building carbon emissions. The European Union's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) targets zero-emission standards for all new constructions. In the United States, ASHRAE 90.1 energy standards demand lower envelope U-factors, driving high-performance glazing adoption.
Double glazed vacuum windows help projects meet Passive House standards without using bulky triple-pane setups. Their thin profile makes them ideal for retrofit upgrades where frame depth limits standard thick units.
Making high-quality VIG units requires precise engineering. Key manufacturing challenges include:
VIG technology continues to improve in several areas:
VIG windows are well-suited for historic restoration projects. Historic buildings often have thin window sashes that cannot fit standard double-pane glass. Standard VIG units fit easily, allowing building owners to improve energy efficiency while keeping the original historic framing.

Our VIG units are engineered for a service life exceeding 25 years. This durability is achieved using high-grade inorganic edge seals and internal getter components that absorb trace gases, maintaining the vacuum over the product's lifespan.
While standard triple-glazed windows achieve U-values around 0.8 to 1.1 W/m²·K, they require thick frames and weigh more. VIG units achieve lower U-values (down to 0.4 W/m²·K) with half the thickness and a lighter weight profile, reducing architectural structural loads.
Yes. We offer fully custom sizing and configuration paths. Since the vacuum sealing process requires post-cutting tempering and edge sealing, sizing must be detailed during the initial engineering review before fabrication.
Yes, our standard configurations use tempered safety glass on both panes. Our low-temperature edge sealing technology preserves the temper properties of the glass during assembly, meeting local safety codes.
The micro-spacers are tiny, high-strength metal cylinders arranged in a precise grid. Under normal light conditions and from standard viewing distances, they are barely visible and do not interfere with visual clarity.
