A VIP's waterproofing comes from its multi-layer high-barrier envelope. Typically composed of laminated polyester, aluminum foil, and polyethylene, this layer prevents liquid water and vapor from reaching the inner core. Additionally, treating core materials like fumed silica with hydrophobic coatings provides backup protection in case of minor punctures.
Because VIPs rely on an internal vacuum to achieve their high insulation performance (0.002-0.005 W/m·K), they cannot be cut, drilled, or altered on site, as this would break the vacuum seal. That is why we provide custom sizing and dynamic geometries, manufacturing each panel directly to the CAD dimensions of your project.
Fumed silica core VIPs are highly stable and naturally hydrophobic when treated. Even if the vacuum is compromised, fumed silica maintains a thermal conductivity of around 0.020 W/m·K.
