For buildings aiming to comply with Passive House (Passivhaus) standards or Net-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB), the thickness required for traditional insulation materials creates substantial design and architectural issues. A standard residential wall requiring an R-value of R-40 would need upwards of 200mm of traditional insulation, reducing net interior living space, increasing foundation loads, and disrupting window jamb details.
This is where Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) represent a revolutionary paradigm shift. By evacuating the internal air space, the convective and gas-conductive heat transfer pathways are virtually eliminated, achieving thermal conductivities ($\lambda$-values) as low as 0.0035 to 0.0045 W/(m·K). In comparison, standard mineral wool or foam insulation exhibits $\lambda$-values between 0.030 and 0.040 W/(m·K). This ten-fold improvement allows architects to design thinner wall cross-sections, optimizing urban floor space, reducing structural weight, and minimizing overall embodied carbon.
The choice of VIP core material dictates both long-term thermal retention and overall product durability under structural stress. Modern manufacturing utilizes two primary materials: fumed silica (nanoporous) and fiberglass (micro-fibrous).

Procuring VIP panels for residential projects requires meticulous planning because vacuum insulation panels cannot be cut, drilled, or altered on-site. Every penetrative anchor or site modification will compromise the vacuum envelope, increasing the thermal conductivity to baseline levels.
Consequently, procurement teams must provide exact CAD drawings of the wall layouts. Zerothermo works with engineering groups to design a hybrid facade plan consisting of standard sizing VIP panels and perimeter compensation zones filled with polyurethane or aerogel boards to facilitate fasteners, window penetrations, and edge framing.
We supply pre-laminated hybrid panels, covering the vacuum insulation core with high-density XPS, EPS, or calcium silicate board layers. This protective coating absorbs typical impacts and allows standard adhesive bonding methods during exterior insulation installation.
Thanks to the nanoporous structure of our fumed silica cores (pore sizes ~10-50 nm), even a complete loss of vacuum only raises thermal conductivity to approx. 0.020 W/(m·K), which is still twice as effective as standard EPS. Under normal architectural conditions, pressure decay averages less than 1 mbar per year, ensuring the thermal conductivity remains below 0.008 W/(m·K) after 50 years of operation.
