In thermal design, the standard metric of performance is the R-Value (thermal resistance) or its SI equivalent, the Thermal Conductivity (λ-value). Standard materials like Polyurethane (PU) or Mineral Wool rely on trapping gas within a fibrous or porous matrix. However, gas conduction remains a primary mechanism of heat transfer. Zerothermo Technology systematically eliminates gas conduction by evacuating the panel core down to a range of 0.1 to 1 mbar, allowing our panels to achieve R-values up to R-50 per inch.

The core material, whether fumed silica or fiberglass, acts as a structural spacer keeping the barrier films apart under extreme atmospheric pressure. Under high vacuum, the mean free path of the remaining gas molecules exceeds the size of the microscopic pores (the Knudsen effect), effectively reducing the gas thermal conductivity to zero.

No, VIPs cannot be cut, drilled, or altered on-site because any puncture will break the high-barrier envelope, venting the internal vacuum and dropping the R-value to standard fumed silica levels (approx. R-6 per inch). All sizes, shapes, and mounting holes must be pre-engineered and manufactured directly at our factory.
Q3: How long does the vacuum pressure last under heavy industrial conditions?
For fumed silica core VIPs used in architectural and refrigeration setups, the expected service lifespan exceeds 30 to 50 years. This longevity is achieved due to the small pore structure of fumed silica, which maintains high R-values even if internal pressure increases slightly over time.
Q4: Are there differences in thermal performance between fumed silica cores and fiberglass cores?
Yes. Fiberglass core VIPs offer an extremely high initial R-value (up to R-65/inch) but require a deeper vacuum (0.01 mbar) and are more sensitive to moisture and gas permeation, giving them a shorter lifespan. Fumed silica cores have a slightly lower initial thermal resistance (R-35 to R-45/inch) but provide a much longer operational lifetime, making them the standard choice for architectural projects.

Thermal bridging at panel seams can be mitigated by installing two overlapping offset layers of VIPs, or by incorporating a thin layer of conventional insulation (such as PU foam or aerogel felt) at the joints. This design minimizes edge heat transfer, ensuring a consistent overall R-value.
