High-Performance Insulation: Technical Architecture

Understanding VIP thermal dynamics requires looking at the three elements of heat transfer: solid conduction, gas conduction, and radiative transmission. By evacuating the internal core material (fumed silica, fiberglass, or aerogel) to sub-millibar pressure levels (typically 0.1 to 1 mbar), gas conduction is virtually eliminated.

1. What is the expected lifespan of fumed silica vacuum insulation panels (VIPs)?

For static indoor applications, such as architectural wall systems, fumed silica VIPs are designed to last between 30 and 50 years. In mobile logistics applications, lifespan depends on mechanical wear, vibration, and handling, typically ranging from 5 to 10 years of active shipping cycles.

2. Can Vacuum Insulated Panels be cut or modified on-site during installation?

No. Vacuum Insulated Panels rely on a fully sealed, evacuated envelope to maintain low thermal conductivity. Cutting, drilling, or puncturing the panel releases the vacuum, causing the thermal conductivity to rise from less than 0.004 W/m·K to approximately 0.020 W/m·K. All shapes, sizes, and penetrations must be pre-planned and customized at the factory.

3. What is the difference between fumed silica cores and fiberglass cores?

Fumed silica cores maintain high thermal efficiency even under moderate vacuum loss. They also offer excellent resistance to humidity and do not release hazardous fibers. Fiberglass cores can achieve lower initial thermal conductivity, but they require high vacuum levels, degrade more quickly if moisture enters, and have a shorter overall lifespan in humid conditions.
