For decades, standard double-glazed windows containing inert gases like argon or krypton served as the cornerstone of residential and commercial insulation. However, these systems are fundamentally limited by gas conduction and convection within the cavity. True Double Glazed Windows Vacuum systems (commonly referred to as Vacuum Insulated Glass, or VIG) eliminate this medium entirely. By evacuating the air between two panes of glass to a vacuum level below 10-3 Pa, convective and conductive heat transfer is practically reduced to zero.
The resulting performance difference is massive: standard double glazing exhibits a U-value (thermal transmittance) of approximately 1.6 to 2.8 W/(m²K), whereas advanced vacuum-insulated double-glazed structures achieve U-values lower than 0.6 W/(m²K). This matches the performance of a traditional brick wall or thick foam insulation board but maintains the structural envelope profile of a single slim glazing profile.
