Q1: What makes a Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP) truly recyclable?
Traditional vacuum insulation panels use fiberglass or polyurethane cores that are highly contaminated with binder materials, making recycling difficult. Zerothermo utilizes a pure fumed silica core. Fumed silica is inorganic silicon dioxide (SiO2), which can be easily separated from the protective outer film. Once separated, the core material can be re-pulverized and processed into brand new core panels without losing its thermal properties.
Q2: How do you prevent vacuum loss and thermal degradation over time?
Vacuum degradation is primarily caused by moisture vapor and atmospheric gas penetration. Zerothermo addresses this by using multi-layer metallized barrier films with low gas transmission rates (GTR) and water vapor transmission rates (WVTR). Additionally, we incorporate specialized chemical getters inside each panel to capture any trace gases that migrate through the film, maintaining the internal vacuum level (≤ 1 Pa) for up to 50 years under standard building conditions.
Q3: Can VIPs be cut or adjusted on-site during installation?
No, vacuum insulation panels cannot be cut, drilled, or altered on-site. Any puncture to the outer film envelope destroys the vacuum pressure, causing the thermal conductivity to rise to around 0.020 W/(m·K). Therefore, precise engineering and planning are required. Zerothermo specializes in manufacturing custom dimensions, shapes, and cutouts based on customer drawings to ensure a perfect fit without on-site modifications.
Q4: How do fumed silica cores compare to fiberglass core VIPs?
While fiberglass core VIPs have a slightly lower initial thermal conductivity (approx. 0.0015 W/m·K), they require a much higher vacuum level (0.1 mbar) to maintain performance, making them highly susceptible to failure from minor gas penetration. Fumed silica has a smaller pore size (around 100 nm), allowing it to maintain a low thermal conductivity of 0.004 W/(m·K) even at higher internal pressures. Fumed silica core VIPs are also non-combustible (Class A fire rating) and completely safe to handle and recycle.
