View DetailsAs global energy mandates tighten and the construction sector aims for carbon neutrality, the Passive House (Passivhaus) standard has become a benchmark for ultra-low energy design. Traditional insulation materials like EPS, XPS, or rock wool need thick profiles—often exceeding 300mm—to hit low thermal transmittance values. This cuts into valuable indoor floor area and presents design challenges at roof edges, window openings, and cantilevers.
Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) solve this challenge. By enclosing a microporous core material within a high-barrier envelope and drawing a vacuum, VIPs achieve an extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.004 W/(m·K) to 0.005 W/(m·K). This performance is roughly six to eight times better than conventional insulation. Designers can achieve low U-values with just a fraction of the thickness, saving space while maintaining high thermal performance.
The choice of core material determines the panel's lifespan and structural stability:
To prevent energy loss at the joints of VIP installations, designers must plan the layout carefully. Because VIPs cannot be cut or modified on-site, a hybrid insulation approach is often used. Custom-sized VIPs are combined with edge strips of traditional insulation (like polyurethane or mineral wool) to fill gaps. Using multi-layered staggered configurations also prevents heat from escaping through the panel joints.

Global architectural firms and engineering procurement managers source vacuum insulation panels from Chinese manufacturers to combine cost efficiency with production scale. The domestic supply chain for high-purity fumed silica and barrier films allows manufacturers to offer high performance at a competitive cost.
At Zerothermo, vertical integration means we manage the entire production cycle: core processing, automated vacuum sealing, and high-barrier wrapping. This results in consistent panel performance and lower production costs.
As Europe, North America, and parts of Asia mandate net-zero building standards, using high-performance insulation is no longer optional. This is driving a shift toward prefabricated VIP elements. Modern factory lines can embed VIP core panels directly into structural wall panels, precast concrete assemblies, and modular units under controlled factory conditions.
This prefabrication step addresses one of the primary concerns with VIPs: handling on the construction site. Embedding the panels in protective layers of concrete, gypsum, or PU foam protects the vacuum seal from accidental punctures during installation.
