Why is fumed silica preferred over fiberglass in VIP cores?
Fumed silica cores have a smaller pore size (~10-100 nm) compared to fiberglass core structures. This physical trait allows fumed silica VIPs to maintain optimal thermal insulation performance even if the internal vacuum pressure degrades slightly over time. Additionally, fumed silica is safer to handle, non-combustible, and provides a much longer service life (typically 50 years for architectural applications vs. 15 years for fiberglass).
Can Vacuum Insulation Panels be modified, cut, or nailed on-site?
No. The core material is completely enclosed in a high-barrier vacuum envelope. Any mechanical disruption like cutting, drilling, or puncturing the skin will result in air entering the structure, causing the thermal conductivity to spike back to the raw core material level of 0.020 W/(m·K). All VIP layouts must be designed and custom manufactured in advance.
