1. The Physics and Science of Microporous Insulation Panels

Thermal management in advanced engineering depends heavily on controlling heat transfer pathways: solid conduction, convective gaseous movement, and infrared radiative transfer. Traditional insulating substances, such as mineral wool or polyurethane foam, struggle in high-performance or extreme temperature settings because of physical limits. This is where microporous insulation panels become essential.

These panels are built around the Knudsen Effect. By using nanoscale particles—principally fumed silica—compacted into a dense mesh, the average pore size is kept below 20 nanometers. This diameter is smaller than the mean free path of air molecules at standard atmospheric pressure (which is about 68 nanometers). Because the air molecules are trapped within these tiny spaces, they collide with the solid structure rather than with each other, effectively stopping gas phase heat conduction.

To handle radiative heat at temperatures up to 1000°C, opacifiers are mixed into the silica core. This structural design achieves thermal conductivity values ($\lambda$) of just 0.015 to 0.020 W/m·K. This performance is up to four times better than conventional insulating media, allowing for much thinner barriers in spatial applications.

What is the expected service life of fumed silica VIPs?
For building applications, fumed silica vacuum insulation panels are typically designed to last over 50 years. This longevity is achieved using multi-layer high-barrier laminate envelopes that minimize moisture and air penetration over time. Even in industrial high-temperature settings with thermal cycling, the internal structure remains stable, provided the panels are shielded from mechanical damage and moisture.
Can microporous insulation panels be cut or altered on-site during installation?
For core vacuum insulation panels (VIPs), cutting, drilling, or reshaping is not permitted on-site, as puncturing the envelope releases the internal vacuum and reduces performance. However, Zerothermo offers flexible, unencapsulated high-temperature nano microporous mats and blankets that can be cut and wrapped around pipes or irregular structures on-site.
How do you manage thermal bridging during large-scale panel installations?
Thermal bridging is managed using specialized layout patterns. We design our installations with staggered joints and apply high-temperature silica sealants or thin aerogel layers along the seams. This ensures continuous insulation across the installation area and prevents heat bypass.
What is the price ratio of VIPs compared to polyurethane foam?
Although fumed silica VIPs have a higher upfront cost than polyurethane foam, they provide four times the insulation value. This allows for much thinner panels, reducing raw material volume and shipping container dimensions, which helps lower overall logistical and storage costs.
