These panels are built around the Knudsen Effect. By using nanoscale particles—principally fumed silica—compacted into a dense mesh, the average pore size is kept below 20 nanometers. This diameter is smaller than the mean free path of air molecules at standard atmospheric pressure (which is about 68 nanometers). Because the air molecules are trapped within these tiny spaces, they collide with the solid structure rather than with each other, effectively stopping gas phase heat conduction.
To handle radiative heat at temperatures up to 1000°C, opacifiers are mixed into the silica core. This structural design achieves thermal conductivity values ($\lambda$) of just 0.015 to 0.020 W/m·K. This performance is up to four times better than conventional insulating media, allowing for much thinner barriers in spatial applications.
